Edmonton Oilers center Gilbert Brule stopped this week to pick up a most unlikely hitchhiker - rock star Bono.

The U2 frontman and his assistant were walking in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on Tuesday when they got caught in the rain. Fortunately for them, Brule and his girlfriend were driving by, taking their German shepherd to a park.

Bono hopped in for a ride. To thank them, he offered Brule and his girlfriend backstage passes for the U2 concert Wednesday night at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. The couple sold their tickets to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals between Boston and Vancouver, took a flight back to Edmonton and went to the show with Brule's mom.

"I like people who play ice hockey - they stop for hitchhikers. I know this from experience," Bono told the concert crowd.

You know when profressional athletetes are being paid too much when they give away their Stanley cup tickets (at the very least $ 500 a crack) and hop on a plane to Edmonton to see a concert.

By the way Joe, I heard it clearly from my house, 2k north of Commonwealth Stadium.

I went to see U2 in 2004 at Roger's Arena (then called GM Place) and, without a doubt, it was one of the best shows I've ever watched (I've been to upwards of one hundred live shows or so). I love hockey and am a dedicated Canucks supporter (not a bandwagon jumper), but I'm not so sure I wouldn't have made the same choice especially since the invite included going backstage to hang out with band. It wouldn't have been all that bad of a trade off, that is unless you don't like their music. Especially since Brule obviously has money to burn, he could have easily been back today for tonight's game and stayed in town for some golf tomorrow. Hell, he could have even invited Bono and The Edge for 18 holes and some Irish coffee.

It's a really bizarre story if you ask me. Bono's just lucky it was Brule who picked him up and not some psychopath who could have pulled out a gun or knife, demanded his jacket and shades, and forced him to sing U2 songs acapella into a recording device.
